Most electric guitars differ from acoustic. When choosing a beginner electric, I would go for the least expensive for starters, just to learn the notes and chords. I play acoustic, and I learned on a cheap plywood no-name my dad bought me. From there, after I knew it was something I wanted to master, I looked into the better models thru the years.
Yamaha is a great name for beginner / student models. You won't go wrong chosing that model. Good luck, and may the force be with you to keep you going... don't get discouraged!

You can't just go by the brand, as every brand makes a whole slew of different models. You're best off going to the music store and spending $150 on one that you like, based on appearance and feel. If you don't know how to play yet, start out on an accoustic, you'll be better becasue of it.
