They give you discounts within the store on items. They can only be used at those stores. I know with Kroger, you get points to be able to get 10 cents of gas at their gas stations. Also you get baby club points, which is if you get 200 points then you get 10 dollars of your next purchase. I go to Kroger often!!!

It's getting to where many major retailers offer this - drug store, grocery stores, book stores, drug stores.... haven't seen department store ones yet, but they'll probably turn up.
