Call a structural engineer first if it's that bad. Better be safe than sorry.

GOOD, CHEAP, CAREFUL, AND ONE WHO CAN EXIST ALL MORNING ON ONLY ONE BREW OF TEA.
If you are only worried about heads being banged, worry you not. a head is only a small part of a body and shoulders should take most of the ding.
Seriously, It sounds a very expensive job and I would consider replacing with metal steps, these can be fitted in a day, where new concrete will have to stand a while before being walked on. Check local building regs.

I would get a few quotes from a few different workmen.

A Builder
Stone mason
Handyman
Bricklayer

Depending upon how big the job is and how technically difficult it is going to be.

You may find that a handyman could do it for a lower price or you may find that a qualified stone mason may need to do extensive work to correct the problem.

Best thing to do is get a few quotes and then see what they come back with. Don't mention the prices to the other people that quote and I bet you get some rather different figures.

I hope that helps

If it is just the front edge of the step then I would suggest getting a handyman and ask him to repair it with some stuff called concrex it is a hard wearing resin based 2 part mix designed for that type of job. it is easy enough to do yourself drill a few largish holes along the broken edge, bond starter bars into the holes with a small amount of the concrex mix, wedge a piece of board along the front of the step to give yourself a edge to work to. mix enough to fill the repair and flatten off the top for a smooth finish wipe white spirit on your trowel to allow it to slide over the surface but for a step I would recommend rubbing the top with a piece of sawn timber (don't want to be slipping on your BM in the wet weather)

A true "mason" can handle anything masonry. It's hard to find true tradesmen these days. So many (so called) contractors are just familiar with the trade but have no study in the field before they enter it just some hands on.

A mason or a general contractor can assist you with this. Try your "yellow pages" under concrete.
