I think that parental abuse can lead to hard line absolutism.
This is true on both the left and the right - but the right wing nut cases are more likely to hold power at present.

I don't know where you are, but in the UK I have definitely concluded that our conservatives rely heavily upon the uneducated masses, to follow their blue carrot all the way to the polling booth, where they then position their X in the box which will condemn them to another 4 years of lies, and insecurity, and job cuts, and inaccurate news while they are endlessly told that they have never had it so good. I too have considered the mean parent hypothesis. I am know developing the theory that there really are people out there, quite a lot of them, who think that society is far better when it is run in a manner that will see a very small number of people fantastically wealthy, while millions 'literally' starve to death.
What can you do about it? One X on one piece of paper every 4 years to change it. Is this really democracy?

I believe that many conservatives had strict parents, and they taught their children absolutes. Abortion is always wrong, All liberals are evil, our religion is the true religion, etc. While liberals were raised by parents who were permissive, protected their kids from the cruelties of the world, and they taught that there are no absolutes.
There must be a third way to raise kids, as not all people are liberal or conservative. There are many moderate independents like me.

no, just responsible parenting. of course a Liberals definition of a mean dad could be much different than that of a normal human. Liberals after all don't believe in punishment or correction. they don't even believe in keeping score at their kids soccer games. and yes I do believe that Liberals are not normal humans.

Not always. Sometimes, in younger conservatives, it's just a rebellion thing because their parents are liberals. And the last thing they want to be is anything like their parents.

There has to be some childhood trauma...like George Bush he had a mother that changed his diapers until 1999...this has to have an effect and I hear she still feeds him the bottle now and then..too old for Mummy's breast...and he prefers scotch now...now, Cheney, god man can you imagine his growing up as the little fat kid..he had to go after all those skinny Iraqis out of childhood envy and Rumsfeld..can you imagine having a nickname like Rummy as a boy and Ashcroft, well look at him I bet he has penis envy...
