My car is almost twelve years old, and I think my tranny's going. It's driving rough, and the engine light comes on if I drive more than 30 minutes straight. Also, most recently..it hesitated at least two times before going in reverse. Is this a transmission problem?

Based on your description, it can be either the tranny, or engine problems... And with the "engine" light going on, I would target an engine issue.

Let's start with the transmission. When you stop at a light, does the engine runs rough and with a low idle, which is fixed when you put the car in neutral or park? That's a sign but not a garantee of tranny problem.

When putting the car in reverse, does it takes a few seconds for the car to move, as if the transmission takes time to build pressure to move?

When the tranny changes gear, does it make "clunks", do you feel some "slippage"?

When you push the gas pedal in gear, does the engine revs up but the car does not accelerate?

I did have transmission issues with both a '94 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2002 Volvo XC70. In the case of the Pathfinder, the body valve was defective, push revs down when idling stopped at a red light. The Volvo was clunking when changing gears and was hesitating for a second when put in reverse. Again, the body valve was defective. B ut in both cases, the engine light never came on...

If your car is driving rough, I would think that you probably need a tune-up: new plugs, air filters, injectors cleaned/replaced, and possibly have a look at the oxygen sensor(s). That would explain the engine light coming on.

go to your local advanced auto parts store and have the check engine codes checked see if that is the problem often engine problems can be confused with transmission problems, also have someone check the transmission fluid level, directions are in the owners manual, if there is a trans problem i have found that Lucas transmission fix works well with SOME trans problem, ask while you are at the advanced auto parts store

If you are getting a check engine light the answer to your problem is in the code being stored. Have your car scanned before you do or spend anything.

It does sound like the tranny is ill. Have you checked the fluid level? If its full, does the fluid look nice and red? If it's black or smells burnt have the trans flushed immediately and you might save it.

Sounds like a misfire in the engine.
Try a tuneup first. It's cheaper.
