Sometimes it depends on whether you want to do stage or film/TV. If the latter, you want to do color. A friend of mine got some and paid a lot to shoot 4-5 rolls, and his agent picked the best one to make 100 prints of. (That's sort of the minimum number, add more if you're going to more auditions.)

It would be good to go to a photographer who's established, and/or have an agent or an acting coach who can give you second opinions. With the amount of money people spend on headshots, it's good to know exactly what you want.

Good luck!

The thing with headshots is what you pay is what you get. If you go cheap that's what they'll look like. I spent close to $500 on mine and I love them. My photographer and I knew what I needed and we spent a good amount of time shooting to get the results we did.

You should have at least 2 different looks, a smiling more uptone shot, and a more serious look. Black and white is classic, but if you have a feature about your physical appearance, such as bright red hair or unique colored eyes, color is the way to go. Being that most photographers are going digital now, it much easier to have your photos changed to either medium with just a click.
Be picky when you choose your photographer, always try to meet them in person and see what they're like. The better you and your photographer click and get along the better your shots will be.

What is used in one city, may NOT be the same in the city where you live and work. Always start by asking those in your city, which is preferred.

Always have 100 Black&White headshots in your file.
You never known when you will meet someone in the industry that asks for your headshot. You don't want say you don't have one with you.

Ok headshots are extremely expenisive. Thy should be in Black and white. Since the price of heatshots are unbelieveable I take my own headshots... they are jsut as good. Headshots are mostly used for auddtions and with bio's for shows and some time you may need to e-mail them in to theater companies so its best to have them in a hardcopy and a digital copy.

The Standard right now for Film & Television actors are Color headshots. Its good to have several looks but essential to have atleast one Commercial (more smiley) and one Theatrical (more serious look)

A portfolio with headshots should portray you in as many themes as possible. Most should be in color, some BW wont hurt.

When getting your photoshoot, you should think about a hairstylist / makeup artist to help give you "quality" mixed looks, and maybe even add some minor pieces of "accesories", like a nice looking watch, sunglasses, etc...

Anything to add looks to your port...

My boy Alfie

Pose nude instead. It will get more attention.
