So i plugged in a new flat panel monitor because it was nicer then the other monitor that is hooked to the laptop. But both things are showing the same thing. They are not working as different monitors but as that same. When i identify this screen they both show as screen 1. How do i seperate them so only one is on?

ok only one moniter is on. can i close my laptop or will it also close the other moniter? And is it normal for things to go slower on a different moniter? Such as typing things way before you see tehm?

Well this usually is done with the Function/f key on mine it is Function+F5 but it depends on the laptop.

Just look for the monitor pic on one of your F keys and hold Function while you press that key it should "togel" the monitors. Dont forget to set it back before you disconnect!

Since you added

Depends on the POWER settings for your laptop, If you have it set to suspend on close the computer will suspend when you close it! So just check your settings.

No - things should not be slower on an external monitor --unless you have it set to a lot higher resolution then memory can become a factor.

Depending on the make of your laptop, one of the Function keys will toggle between either display. It's usually f5 or f7 - there should be a picture of a monitor on it. Hold down the function key (fn) and press one of the above. A display should come up, if you have picked the right one, showing the screen choices. Still holding down the fn key, press the function key until you have selected the setup you want.

Depending on the laptop, there is usually a FN (function key) and a corresponding key on the numbers (in blue) that looks like a monitor. Use that to toggle between, one or both of the displays. If you dont have these keys, right click on desktop and click properties. This will give you display properties. Click on settings, then displays. You should be able to choose what you want as your display from there.
