No, this cannot be done. The refrigerants have two different boiling points, and the machine will not function properly. In addition, The oils in the refrigerants are not compatible, and the oil is in the system. You cannot remove the oil, you will have to recharge with the same refrigerant, or get a new unit with the type of refrigerant you prefer.

yes you do have to vacuum out the R12 and the oil, because it is not capable with R134a,then go to the auto parts store and buy the kit,it comes with three cans of freon, one can of oil,all the adapters to screw on your AC line ports, the low side and the high side ports, and also comes with a blue cap for the low side, and a red cap for the high side.the R12 service ports are threaded and the R134a adapters are quick disconnect types.i think it may even come with a gauge and all,you can look in the box,if not you can buy the gauge seperate,it isnt much..Also i have heard you have to change all kinds of parts out and all of that,i have talked to alot of different mechanics some says you may have to change stuff out in the AC system and some says you do not as long as you vacuum all the R12 out.The only difference is R134a doesnt run at such a high temperture as R12 does.hope this helps.i do not blame you for changing over because R12 will become obsolete and will longer be used, and also it is getting very expensive,i use 30 pound cyclinders of R134a.R12 for a 30 pound cyclinder is about 1,000 dollars or more.so if you imagine if you have a leak how much it will cost you to keep having it charged up.
