Since spinal bifida isn't a genetic problem, it isn't something to really worry about. It's usually caused by a defect in formation of the spine and spinal column.
It would have been checked for on the ultrasound. I'm sure they pointed everything out to you, so you could understand what you were seeing, and one of the first things they look at is the spine. It would have been very obvious if there would have been something wrong like this.
Don't worry about it. If the ultrasound didn't show a problem then there really is nothing to worry about. You can run it by your doctor if you don't feel that you are comfortable without a more detailed ultrasound, but more then likely, your doctor will tell you that the first ultrasound didn't show anything, so there is no reason for a second. But letting your doctor know about it isn't a bad idea. At least they will be aware of problems in your family.

Spina bifida doesn't 'run in families', it just happens. But don't worry, they automactically look for that in all ultrasounds. If your doctor sees anything in the first ultrasound, they'll order a second one at about 32 weeks or so just to double check. I had to have one late in my pregnancy because my OB couldn't see some things, but my son was fine.

An ultrasound done at 20 weeks is used to detect any form of birth defect.. If they had found something they would have let you know.. So relax, and enjoy the pregnancy your baby will be just fine... Congratulations and Best of Luck.....

At your scan that is one thing that they look for. So if your dr didnt seem overly worried or didnt say anything then you shouldnt worry. You can however talk to your dr at your next app. and let them know what is going on and they can do another scan (at least some drs can) to double check. But i think that if the dr didnt say anything or didnt seem worried then you shouldnt worry either. Good luck and congrats

This is not something that usually runs in families. Over 95% of babies with spinabifida are born to parents who have no family history of it. It's caused from a neuro tube defect and it usually has to do with a lack of folic acid. Besides that, it would have been very obvious on the sonogram. It's one of the first things that they look for.

Certainly in the UK at a 20 week scan they check for Spina Bifada. So the chances are they would have spotted it.
Spina Bifida is gentic:-

I am fairly sure that it would have been spotted at your scan, but if you are very worried, please talk to your Doctor for reassurance.

Your doctor should have already checked, but it never hurts to mention and your doctor would probably want to know. GOOD LUCK.

They already looked for it during the u/s. If your baby were affected, they would have found it. Good luck!
