I presume by dowels you actually mean Rawlplugs ?
these are the small (generally Plastic) tubes that the screw is inserted into.
a dowel is generally a piece of grooved round timber that is hammered into two aligned holes & glued to give an invisible fixing,
If you had actualy stated what job you required the screws for then I am sure we could have been of more help..but yes there are literally hundreds of different styles of screws but the most common and I would say usefull is the chipboard style pozidrive/cross head screw which serves well in most cases as it has a good deep thread for holding purposes & a non slip head for those occasional DIY'ers........All the best Smiffy

There are definitely different screws for different jobs. Tap Cons or the blue screw are for masonry, concrete, galvinized for decks and outside exposure, fine and coarse drywall screws for drywall, etc. Some building codes require that a particulare type screw be used for a particular type of job. If it's a big project, check with your local code enforcement. Spacing of screws can be critical also.

Yes, dowels and correct screws. Important to use maximum amount of dowel length with screw.

Ive heard of a long screw, obviously needed if you have a long hole that needs screwing and Im sure the reverse would work for a short screw. not sure how speed fits into that though i.e. fast or quick!!

yes,metal-work screws are tougher than wood-work screws for the obvious reason that metal is tougher than wood
