Yes...to a degree. In fact, this fact has factored into a number of their defense plans. Many times Russians generals would feign battle only to retreat farther inland in order to draw attacking armies farther into itself and away from their supplies. When confronted with an attacking Swedish army in the Northern War (1700-1721) Russia applied this strategy, poisoning its own wells and burning crops as it retreated to deprive the Swedish army (then one of the best in the world). Eventually, after coaxing their enemies hundreds of miles inland, they stood their ground and defeated the attacking army...just as they did in WWII, as you indicated.

They are defeatable, yes (Crimean War, Russo-Turkish war, etc.) but they have proven unconquerable thus far. The only exception being that some historians believe conquering Vikings founded the first of Russia's established kingdom.

The Soviet Union was literally being propped up by the United States during WWII. Even Winston Churchill admits that Stalin played Roosevelt like a fiddle. That still didn't stop the Germans from coming very close to winning the war in the East. Some speculate that if the Germans had taken the Oil rich areas of southern Russia, then Russia's defeat would have been swift.

They had no success during world war I. Russia collapsed internally, and backed out of the war.

It's not quite invulnerable as you might think

Russia lost in war to the Mongols, who conquered most of the medieval Russian state. (1236-1238) Russian winters aided the Mongols who were used to harsher climates. The Russians only centuries later overthrew them (1480).

Prussia simultaneously defeats Russia, France and Austria during the Seven Years War. (1756-1763)

Japan defeated Russia in the "Russo-Japanese War". (1904-1905)

Germany forced Russia into retreat, leading to dissent within Russia and its inevitable red revolt. After the revolt the Reds pulled out of the Great War in a de facto state of defeat.

The USSR lost to Afghanistan(with US support).
(1979-1989)

The Soviet Union loses the Cold War, and collapses in 1991.

Russia may loose the war, like the only case when false Dimity was pronounced a Russian king by Polish troops. But who remembers him and his awful fate now? Temporal victory over Russia only make it stronger later. The territories lost by Lenin had been regained and multilied by Stalin. It's only a matter of time for Russian Empire to restore and enlarge.

Afghanistan in the 80's & Japan 1910(?)
In terms of defence though, Russia's size is a blessing and a curse. In WW1 the Germans decided to strike France first to take them out of the war before Russia could fully mobilise her army. Known as the "Schlieffen plan", had Germany have achived the capitulation of France she could have then still had time to rush troops to the eastern front before Russia was totally war ready.

Not anymore than we are and you should remember that vast tracts of it are uninhabited and wouldn't need to be taken. It was these vast tracks that defeated Napoleon and Germany, since as land troops advanced the supply lines became exposed and could not reach them.

These days, conventional war techniques would probably not be used; especially against a country with the same armaments that we have.

In the three wars that you mentioned the attacking army was ill prepared for the conditions they met in Russia. The winters are brutal and they start early. The terrain is treacherous and they were outmanned. It's hard to beat them on their home turf, not impossible but you better have your act together.

Is your question legible?
Try this: " Is Russia Undefeatable? Russia successfully defeated France during Napoleon's time, and during WW I, and WW II. Is this country too big to be taken?"

My answer is: Russia may have defeated Napoleon's army, but Russia did not defeat anyone in WW I -- it lost in WW I.
Russia came very close to losing in WW II. One does not have to occupy the entire country to defeat its government.
