Alright so it's not THE closet monster but I suddenly just get terrified by like almost nothing and I have to sleep with the lights on, tremble at shadows etc. I tell myself I'm *23* and should be more mature than this, but I get so scared it chokes me. I also have horrible nightmares, that wake me up in the middle of the night and keep me up the rest of the night, everything from chase scenes to disturbing imagery never the same. for the last 20 years it's been an average of 2 nightmares a month. This last 3 months though it's uped to abouth 4 or 5 a week. Nothing has changed I'm not stressed or anything, I drink tea and all sorts of calming things and I hate sleep medication. Ideas? Suggestions? For the monsters and the nightmares both?

For those who've asked, I don't take any medication for anything, I tried but I disliked it, oh 6 years ago now.

I heard what you last thought about before you fall asleep is what you dream about.
So, I suggest maybe you clear your mind of those things before you go to sleep.
Or watch a funny movie or tv show and keep it on until you get tired.
When you feel you're about to fall asleep, shut the tv off and put a light on.

I'm 24 and have felt that way numerous times. I also suffer from nightmares a LOT and they are so disturbing that I think they would make great horror flicks. It's perfectly normal to feel this way, especially if you have a vivid imagination. Usually, I feel like this after watching scary movies, but you may be feeling it regardless of what you watch. Try to remember this, no spirits, monsters, or ghosts will hurt you in your home, it's all a mind game that you're playing on yourself. Silly as this sounds, watching "Finding Nemo" helps put my mind to rest before bedtime. It also puts positive imagery in your mind before getting to rest. Another movie that's worked for me is Ace Ventura. My point is, maybe try a funny/cartoon movie without a scary villain character and that may help. As for me, I watched "SAW II" last night before bed, and it was a BAD idea because I had dreams reflecting the movie. I think the images we see before bedtime have a large impact. I hope this helps!

Yes, it is normal. Most of people afraid of dark and alone. I am one of them. I find that when I get to that point, I would pray to God. It was a comfort to me. I know that God is protecting me, it calm me down and get through the sleep the rest of the night. Get you a night light. Put one in your closet if it will help you.

Are you taking ANY medications, either prescribed or "over the counter"? If so, one of those could cause the symptoms you describe.
