If you're booting to the Dell recovery disk then you are re-installing your windows, presumably because you have un-recoverable errors so I'm afraid yes you do want to format to rid yourself of whatever problems you have. If the computer still runs then save your data to CDs first.

If your booting to the recovery disk because you cant get into windows, than you will need to reformat your hard drive and re-install windows. Another option, is to boot to the windows cd, and run a repair install. If you have data you need saved (it will be wiped out after format), you can copy it an external source if you can get into windows, which im assuming you cant.

The other option for data backup, is to take out the hard drive, and put it in an external hard drive case, or hook it up as a slave drive in another computer. Good luck.

You have to format, if using Dell's Recovery disks. Read this:

Back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive).

Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

There are 2 Cdz with Dell.. 1 Resource CD.. Another Operating system already installed on your computer.. The resource cd is used for diagnostics or installation of drivers after reinstalling windows.. Now with OS cd.. Put in the cd.. Tap F12.. Boot from cd.. 1st screen wld press enter to install windows.. Or to repair presss "R".. Hence if u press r.. u can go to recovery console.. there u need to type in 1.. Press Enter.. Than press Enter again. .Than type in "chkdsk /r".. after that completes type in "fixboot".. If tht doesnot resolve the problem than reboot again.. press Enter on 1st Screen.. press F8 on 2nd screen.. and than u wld get an option again to press "R".. tht shld repair ur operating system.. Issue resolved..
