Poe was buried in the plot his grandfather, General Poe, had bought upon his return from battle during the Civil War; he was placed to the right of his grandfather with his headstone's writing facing east. Edgar Allan Poe did not, initially, have a headstone although a temporary marker was placed at his head bearing the Number 8. This marker was not replaced because of an incident related by the late Colonel John C. Legg, Sr., successful grain merchant and one time Commissioner of Police in Baltimore City:

No stone was immediately provided for young Poe, but I placed a marker bearing the number eight over the grave. The Poe stone was laying in a marble yard near the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks when a freight train jumped the track and demolished the stone and several others in the yard
Because of the lack of a proper marker for his grave, there was apparently some confusion following his burial prompted by a shift in location to a new monument dedicated to Poe in 1875. The school children donated a stone monument, placed upon lots number 173-174-179-180 in a corner of the front yard, on October 1, 1875 at which time Poe's grave was dug up and his body relocated to the said monument. By this time, the public had known of Poe's death and presented an impressive and contrite assemblage at the dedication of the tomb which was held on November 17, 1875. One observer, later identified as the poet-priest Father Abraham J. Ryan, noted that day a certain mourner so taken with his grief that the priest wrote several stanzas to memorialize the image and Poe:

I did not know that he had two grave sites. You have me wondering now. I visited Baltimore and visited the grave site in a small church yard. I have the photos somewhere. It was a really nice church and the graveyard small and cozy and clearly very old.

Actually, the answer is both simple and appropriate - Poe was so drunk when he died, that _everyone around him_ saw double. Since nobody could figure out which image was the real Poe, they just dug two graves and buried them both, figuring that one grave would be empty, but it didn't really matter which.
