May contain peanuts? It does contain peanuts! It's kinda sad that people are that stupid. Someone with a peanut allergy is generally smart enough to figure that they shouldn't eat something that says peanuts on the label.

this is an assumption, but i think maybe some peanut butter jars don't actually contain peanuts. they might be peanut flavored and people with allergies can eat that. if they contain peanuts they have to be informed. if i am wrong then the label must be there for lawsuits and less than intelligent people.

whether or not a container is for peanuts, as long as the product does contain peanuts, the manufacturer must put a caution label for safety. And if there is a caution sign, most likely people will read it first

Lawsuits and lawyers! Why do you think they have a warning label about taking a hair dryer into the bath tub? Basically people can sue a company for not having a warning on a product even if common sense would dictate that you shouldn't take an electrical appliance into the bath tub or that you shouldn't eat peanut butter if you are allergic to peanuts.

Because companies have to cover themselves now because people are dumb in general and sue happy. Look at the person who sued McDonalds years ago for thier coffee being too hot. Most manufacturers have a disclaimer so people cannot sue them. Alergies to peanuts are on the rise too, so that is why they do it on peanut butter.

Maybe they are definitely that litigious. I can't believe that in this country you can eat an ovbiously peanut based product knowing full well that you are allergic to peanuts and then sue the company that made it for not warning you that your bag of peanuts may have peanuts in it.

Maybe the consumer thinks it's a jar of fake peanuts? They might as well to avoid lawsuits. It wouldn't make much since to put it on everything BUT peanuts. It's humorous, but it makes sense.

the caution is for persons who are allergic and those who want to protect them also.
Anaphylaxis is deadly.
"may contain" refers to trace amounts that might be in the product even though the product does not have peanuts in its main ingredient list. The product, while in production, may have come in contact with machinery that has had contact with peanuts. Even trace amounts of peanut can trigger an alleric reaction to persons who have that sensitivity.

Because someone actually sued the company, claiming she believed peanut butter was peanut-flavored, not made with actual peanuts, and she had a reaction. What some people won't think of!
