The 30th annual Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular is a patriotic pyrotechnic extravaganza, as befits one of the world’s great cities. The show begins after 9 p.m. and organizers say it uses 55 times more fireworks than any other display in the United States. There are three different launch points (the East River, South Street Seaport and the Statue of Liberty), so you can see it from just about anywhere: Manhattan Island, the four surrounding boroughs, Roosevelt Island and New Jersey. There’s an art to finding just the right spot, though.

The most popular place to watch the fireworks is on FDR Drive from 14th to 42nd streets, with pedestrian entrances at 23rd, 38th and 42nd Streets. Another hot spot is along the West Side Highway Park starting at Battery Park City all the way up to 14th Street. And the South Street Seaport gives you a 180-degree view of all of the launch points.

Some elite parties are held on the rooftops of some of the city’s hotspots, such as the 60 Thompson, Hotel Gansevoort, or Sushi Samba 7. And the ultimate view is from the top of the Empire State Building. For $175 you can watch the fireworks from the tallest building in the city. There is an open bar and snacks and space is limited to the first 150 people. Call (212) 736-3100 or (877) NYCVIEW.

Roosevelt Island offers a more affordable but equally dramatic view. For $18 you can have your own chair and watch jugglers and other performers. There is also a food court where you can buy refreshments. Call (212) 832.4540 or visit www.rioc.com.

they are shooting on the east river around 34th to 42nd street. so the east side is best - the 80's would be better b/c you would be closer
