I going to say this. Darkness is my favorite element. I don't see how darkness is evil. It is just like blaming a wild snake for the Fall of Man in the garden of Eden. I am currently writing a book that will have a dark hero. But I still wonder why must darkness be put into a position confronting good?

Darkness is my element too. When i show my dark side people think i'm godless and evil. I just don't get it.

I think that darkness is sort of a cliche'd symbol for evil. It's what people prefer to think of it as, like white wedding dresses symbolizing purity. White has nothing to do with purity, it's just the meaning we've given it.
Darkness can be very warm and relaxing. We find respite in the dark, whether that's through sleeping, enjoying a dinner with your loved one by nothing but candlelight, or closing your eyes just to escape from the noise of the day.
No, darkness does not always have to battle the light, as most great authors would lead you to believe. Although it's not my personal favorite element, I can still say without a doubt that you have every right to call it yours.

It all stems back to primitive man. Many carnivores hunt at night. Primitives were vulnerable at night and prior to fire they were most vulnerable. This grew into mans instinct to stay away from dark places unless well lit.
This fear of the dark grew into fear for anything that wasn't well lit and fed other fears. Fears worse than liveing beasts but rather imaginary beasts. ex: satan, boogyman. . .
Before abstract or direct reasoning and science all people had to believe in was myth, legend and Religion. Especially primitive man who must have though fire was a miracle.
That fear is still perpetuated to this day. " I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark ally", "That man's soul is as black as night". In the end it's ingrained into the human psyche to fear the dark. That doesn't mean we don't grow out of it. It's natural conditioning. Why do you think birds fly away when you run at them?
As for your hero. I believe the term most often used is Anti-hero. Not a villain but not you cookie cutter superman.

Darkness is the manifestation of that which is unseen. That which is considered "evil" within us all is what we want to remains unseen, but often is not. It comes from deep within (what Carl Jung called the Shadow) which is also hidden from us. In the natural state, the sun, which brings the light, also produces the life of the natural world...
So: life=light=good; hidden=unseen=darkness=non-good. (I say non-good instead of "evil" because not all cultures or philosophies or religions have such a concept).
I suggest your read both Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell!!!

It's because, on a primitive level, humans are sort of programmed to be scared of the dark. You can't see danger coming in the dark and we're not nocturnal (if we were, darkness would probably be good). Because we're so scared of it on that primal level, it became associated with evil and danger. Light, when we could see and properly protect ourselves, became good and safe.

We didn't get evil dark from the Bible, the Bible got it from us.

In sunlight we are predators,
In starlight we are prey.
And so the dark is well named evil.

Still, as we cower in our caves,
How can we not wish to have, or be
Some dark hero
To take dominion of the night?

I dont think the dark is evil at all, its actually calming and tranquil. I don't know but maybe that general thought of dark being evil somehow stems from racism....

Most of it has been taken from the bible when it mentions that Satan is the prince of darkness and it just got out of hand like the cowboy who wears a black hat is bad...

i think we fear 'darkness' and perceive it as 'evil' because humans tend to want to hide the evil deeds/thoughts, etc. from others. that is we don't want to be found out. since we understand that 'darkness' often hides evil, we learn to fear it.

Peace+
