Canned answer:
If your PC is slowing down, or acting strangely, it's probably infected with malware. Use the link below to learn more about "malware".
Then, you need to install:
ONE Anti-virus (delete ALL others, I use AVG free),
http://www.free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff
ONE Firewall (Zone Alarm),
http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=78lts&ctry=CA&lang=en
Or (for Vista):
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/promotions/vista/index5.html
and these 5 Anti-spyware tools:
Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Ad-Aware 2007
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html
cCleaner (technically, not anti-spyware, but very useful)
http://www,ccleaner.com
I use all regularly. Download them, install them and learn how to use them (HINT: Use the Help TAB). (Need more help? Re-post.)
TIP: The apps above can only clean up so much. As a last resort, back up all personal data from your PC (copy to CD / DVD / external hard drive) and do a Windows "Clean Install" (for instructions go to: (www.theeldergeek.com).
Note: You must use your Recovery disks, if included with your PC, to avoid driver problems, not a store-bought XP. The Recovery disks may be ON the hard drive, so Read The Friendly Manual FIRST.

You may have programs that are in your startup folder, old temp files, lots of desktop icons. The bottom right corner at your clock is your system tray. If you have to many programs running than they are using up your memory. If you hear your hard drive working every time you move on to another task its because windows is taking information out of your RAM and placing it in the pagefile on you hard drive. Click start, run, and type msconfig, then click startup. Now you can see all the programs that are loaded during a boot. You can disable the ones you don't want to load but it will not delete them. If your comp is still running slow you can upgrade your RAM. Just match the size, speed, manufacture that you have and you will see a big difference in speed. To find out what you have for Ram click start, Right click on My Computer and click properties. This will show you some basic info about you comp. You can also run this command too: msinfo23.exe, and a screen will display your system information. On the first page scroll down to your memory info to see what you have installed and what you are using. Look for Total Physical memory and Available Physical memory - this is your RAM

Hit ctrl, alt, delete
open task manager click processes tab check if any programmes running in background are taking up all the memory.
also, go to run type msconfig in the startup tab uncheck everything that doesn't need to run all the time so it uses less processes and therefore runs quicker
also right click on my computer , select properties and increase your paging file size. this is your virtual memory. If you are unsure about this google it.
ype into google 'windows registry repair pro' this program gets rid of everything that makes your computer run slow, and ALWAYS check for spyware after each use of using your computer!
Also, if you aren't going to use your BIG games in a while uninstall them, and when you want to use them again, install them again.
Clean Up Your Desktop To Speed Up Your Computer
My desktop on my computer was like my desk - cluttered! Having a clean desktop is important enough that Windows XP now asks you to clean up unused desktop icons. If you have always ignored the prompt like I used to, you can either clean them up manually by right clicking your mouse on them and selecting delete or you can access the Windows XP program.
* Start
* Control Panel
* Double-click "Display".
* Click the "Desktop" tab.
* Click the "Customize Desktop" button at the bottom.
* Click the "General" tab.
* Click the "Clean Desktop Now" button at the bottom.
# Get rid of Spyware. Lots of computers have Spyware and don't even know it. Some of the warning signs include:
* computer running extremely slow for no apparent reason
* computer has been taking you to websites that you don't want to go to
* you get pop-ups even when you're not on the Internet.
If your computer has any of these symptoms, you are likely to be infected with Spyware. Some of the best solutions include AdAware SE and SpyBot Search and Destroy.
# Streamline MSCONFIG. Many computers have unnecessary programs running in the background which can cause a huge decrease in performance. You can use a utility called MSCONFIG to turn off unnecessary Start Up items that are
robbing your system of memory and processing power.
To run MSCONFIG, click on the Start Menu and click on run. In the run dialog box, type msconfig and press "ok".
# Uninstall unused programs and files. Let's face it. After a while, there are a number of programs and files that we simply don't use anymore. Give your computer a
performance boost and get rid of them.
To delete programs completely, you must first go to the Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs.
# Run disk clean up. Disk clean up can be found by going to the start menu, to programs, accessories, system tools and then clicking on Disk Cleanup.
# If you're running Windows XP, turning off the fancy graphics will cause a noticeable increase in the speed up your computer. First, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System. You may need to "Switch to Classic Mode" to see the System applet.
Next, go to the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button under Performance.
Select the "Adjust for best performance" radio button. Click Apply and then OK. The graphics aren't as slick, but your computer will run a lot faster.

You don't need multiple anti virus programs... they're probably what's slowing the PC down!
Stick to just one... Norton or McAfee. That's all you need. If the worst comes to trhe worst, reinstalll your operating system from disc.
And I'd adsvise against downloading whatever that is in the 1st answer... could be anything BTW!

U surely have too much processes running in ur windows...Try to use only one antivirus that u trust. The real-time scan of the multiple AntiViruses will slow dow your PC by clogging ur memory...Try to eliminate unnecessary programs at startup...Type 'msconfig' in the run dialog(Start -->Run)Go to the startup tab and uncheck what you are sure is unnecessary at startup...e.g Adobe Acrobat, etc, etc...Cheers...
