Because religion has always been used to go to war.....

because religion is a form of brainwashing to varying different degrees.
the "terrorists" believe that what they are doing is apparently pleasing their god, because this is what the people preeching the religion have taught them.

where at other people believe that the "terrorist's" god isn't real, but their own is and that must mean that the terrorists are obviously evil people without true religion because it's not the same as theirs.
so they go to war fight a bit and try to make it so the other people stop believing in their invisable magical deity and fall into line with what the winners think.

Religion is a plauge on our society when it is allowed to dictate policy that effects everyone not just their own cult followers.

Because there's always a need for an excuse other than the real facts. You can't say to a nation " the president is stopping me from doing what I want, so we go to war." Or " that country is rich in oil which we so badly need, so we go to war." Nor can you say Afghanistan has the potential to become the biggest supplier of opium, which if we can control would bring great financial benefits, so we go to war." Etc, etc. etc.......

It is because religion is one of the big divides between society. If we are different in some way, or argue over something, then we go to war.

When a country lives by (what we see as ) extreme regulations, such as -not bearing your face in public, female circumcision, no alcohol, no fornication etc etc.
You have to have a very convincing reason to get the population to agree to it.

Claiming that it is written into the scriptures of your faith is one way of doing this.
Being conditioned from birth to be actively engaged in that faith, guarantees compliance.

When that population is also told by the leaders of that faith that neighbouring countries are disrespecting or ridiculing the laws of their faith, when they are told that their faith does not allow for ridicule or criticism, when their faith informs them that they must take up arms against these neighbours for their supposed disrespect, then it is easy to see how religion can play such an influence.

There are letters on the internet from the mother of a 13 year old suicide bomber, she states that she encouraged and aided her son to carry out a suicide bombing. She rejoiced when his actions managed to kill 10 people and friends and neighbours joined her in a celebration of her sons death.

You cannot reason with that kind of mentality, you cannot appeal to their human nature, their human nature is to preserve and multiply their own religious beliefs and followers, at any cost to themselves or others.

It seems to me that terrorists try to influence religion rather than the other way around.

Nations and cultures have historically claimed their aggressions are divinely inspired as a way to legitimize them, when in fact aggression is usually motivated primarily out of greed or some other human frailty.

I think it is a mistake to bring so many people from an old tradition like Islam to the west this causes terrorism, it has been shown already not to work. You can't blame them in a way they think they must fight for Islam; we are to blame for allowing so many to come here

to influence a person to do something, you have to offer him something worth more than the thing he has to do.

to get a person to be willing to kill or be killed, you have to offer him an ideal which is bigger than his death.... so war is sold to the masses based on patriotism, family, and....... religion.
