I wouldn't say stupid. I'd just say it is not necessary. My Grandparents came from Belgium- and they called themselves American! Not Belgium Americans. And they weren't born here but they became Americans by taking the oath of citizenship! All people who are born here should just be American! I don't see any reason to say anything about another person's skin color either!
Lots of Africans are white. What should they be called when the immigrate to America?

I do agree, I also think it is stupid, but the term is used in reference to race more so than nationality. If I have a neighbor that is white and now an American citizen after immigrating from Africa, would I be able to call him an African American?

It is offensive to refer to Asians by the color of their skin, it is not offensive to refer to Caucasians as white. Why? I suppose I don't mind the Asian term because it is just one word. African American is just too long and does not flow in a sentence. It seems that every twenty five years or so, the term for the black race gets changed. I hope the next term is one word and preferably one syllable.

ya, the term "African American" annoys the Hell out of me,too.
First of all ,there are White PPl from Africa, too. Are they African American, When they become US citizens?

and What's the matter with the term "Black" ? it's one Simple Syllable , why couldn't we leave well enough alone?

Then .. if a person was wondering ,you could add in "She's an African American", or " a Carribean American" , ,to get down to specifics.
That makes more sense to me.

Peace,
~Laurie

I'm a black American and I've been to Africa. It's a lovely experience that all should have a chance to enjoy. ALL Black People, come from Africa through ancestral voyages. Whether they are born in America, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, England, Canada, Etc. Don't be a fool!

I think all "hyphenated Americans" should think about this; where is the UNITY in proudly telling us your origin background with a hyphen? NO ONE CARES. Why African Americans are identified with a whole other CONTINENT is beyond me, for example. "North American-American" would sound just as superfluous. I have SIX national backgrounds along with "American". Only one matters. Civilizations that historically fragmented like this have ALWAYS ceased to exist. Let's change this incredible glut of "Diversity" Awards to "Unity" Awards ..then I'll actually pay any mind.

I dont see anything wrong with the term African American if the person was born in Africa.
Example; Theresa Kerry is an African American.

I agree with you. Hyphenated Americans are used for dividing America for political reasons. BTW since there are whites in Africa, were they to come here, we would have white African-Americans..

Yes, unfortunately... "politically correct" is not always the TRUTH. The truth is if you are not born in Africa, you are not "African American". If you are not born in Australia, you are not "Australian", if not born in Russia, you are not "Russian" and so on.... born in America is just plain AMERICAN and there is nothing wrong with that!!
