Subject does the action. Direct object receives it.

Joe throws the ball.

Joe is the subject. The ball is the direct object.

In "Joe throws the ball to Sally.", Sally would be the indirect object, in case your wandering what to due with nouns that are neither doing or receiving the action.

The subject does something. The object has something done TO it.
