I have SBC/ATT/Yahoo DSL. FOR MONTHS I have had problems with my internet cutting off, not being able to access Yahoo messenger or download yahoo email to outlook, etc. They have come out and checked the lines and last time they said the lines were okay and the problem is with the DSL hub for the subdivision or maybe the modem? Then, all of a sudden, everything was okay for several months and now here we go again... How can I tell if its the modem? Maybe its my computer? Time to switch DSL companies? Please advise!

It sounds like the telco is having issues at the CO or the remote DSLAM. If cable internet is available in your area, switch to that instead. Cable is much faster and more reliable if you're more that about 1 mile from the CO or remote DSLAM. It's usually more expensive but the speed and reliability are worth every penny.

A competitive DSL carrier may be worth trying but many of them are just piggybacking on at least some of the telcos equipment. If that's the case, your performance won't improve.

hrm, sounds like inside wiring?!
it works great when temperatures are "nominal", sux when it's hot or cold etc.. All you can really do is persist and get AT&T/SBC to fix their cabling. If they have a head end/node problem they should be fixing it, I do believe they are required by the FTC (or FCC) to fix those problems.

Also if you do leave AT&T, dont do it for Comcast, I've had nothing but trouble w/ comcast (fixing the problems they have on their network)...FOr some reason they dont think a squirrel having chewed through a cable somewhere in the cable plant is a problem they need to seek out fixing, and locally, comcast is handled by local people, and not the national conglomerate they claim to be.

but if I were you, I'd just hammer SBC/ATT further to get them to fix whatever it is.. Also, if you know any neighbors w/ AT&T/SBC DSL see if they have the same problem. IF more of you call in, then more of you can make an impact. IF it is only you having problems, then it's in your home and you will want to look at the inside wiring that goes from the POE (the grey box on the wall outside your house), and possibly replace that wiring. If your prem is older, then you may just have bad wiring etc..

good luck

problem may be (1) at the Central Office. (2) the length of your phone line routing form the CO to your house and (3) the circuit it is running from.

you can verify with other ISP if they can provide you better service. I suggest you use cable service instead.

I'd switch companies.
Try Comcast, Earthlink, or People PC.
