If they are not booking around the tank constantly doing this and that, they may be becomming ill. Check water perameters if fish are lathargic. Like people when they get sick they don't want to do much. Healthy goldfish are active constantly when the lights are on.

They think the reflection is another fish. My fish do it all the time. And sometimes they aren't looking at their reflection... they're just looking out the tank walls, like you or your room. They are just looking at their surroundings... why do you want them to stop?
Yeah you can stop them... put black construction paper on the walls that they are looking at their reflections and a background especially for tanks. Then really it would be a mirror. Or you can just wait, because they'll learn that it's not another fish.
Best of Luck!

The fish don't see their reflection, they see out of the glass. If you'd like to "truth test" this, stick your head under the water in the tank and open your eyes.

They are probably seeing you enter the room and are now begging for food. Fish will usually recognise when someone enters the room, and some cichlids can even distinguish different people. Don't feed them every time they beg though, or you will soon have dead fish, and the "staring" will no longer be your concern.

I have no idea why they are doing this. I suggest you put them in a larger tank with lots of gravel and plants. This will give them more exciting things to do than just stare.
