An explosion occurs at the end of a pier. The sound reaches the other end of the pier by traveling through three media: air, fresh water, and a slender metal handrail. The speeds of sound in air, water and the handrail are 343, 1482, and 5040 m/s, respectively. the sound travels a distance of 125 m in each medium.
(a) Through which medium does the sound arrive first, second, and third?
(b) After the first sound arrives, how much later do the secnd and third sounds arrive?

a) If the sound is travelling simultaneously through the three media, it is clear that the medium with the highest velocity will transmit the sound first. Intermediate velocity will be second and air with the least velocity third.

T1 = 125 / 5040 T2 = 125 / 1482 and T3 = 125 / 343 seconds respectively.

b) Subtract T1 from T2 and T2 from T3 for answers.

a) 1-handrail, 2-water, 3-air

b) 125m / 5040m/s = 0.0248 s handrail

125m / 1482 m/s = 0.0843 s water

125m / 343 m/s = 0.3644 s air

so, 0.0248 s arrives, 0.0843 - 0248 = 0.0594 s later for water, and 0.3644 - 0.0248 = 0.3396 s later for air
