We want to be independent because it is the best alternative. Only who do not understand prefer to be dependent.
Ask yourself what is the opposite of independence. You may become dependent upon someone else. In life, there is no such a thing as a free lunch. You pay a price for this dependence, a price not obvious. Once you become wiser (to me, once you become aware of the price you pay), you fight for that independence. Of course, I do not include here the alliances we make thru our lives. Enough is to say that we enter those alliances with the eyes open, we are aware that we both give and take, and that the alliance is for mutual profit, not one-sided affair.
The second alternative is to become a parasite of someone else. Such cannot work in the long run. Eventually, the person either realizes the situation, seeks redress. Also, to keep the situation going, you would need far more effort than what is warranted by the profit.
You mentioned burden of responsibily and risk. It takes wisdom to realize that those things are minimized by independance. To be dependant only increases risk, it does not shift responsibility.

We really want both. All creatures must become independent of their parents, so we want independence. We humans, although not all creatures do, crave society and mutual support. We evolved in a way that emphasizes the benefits of cooperation, whether hunting or farming. Each of us has different limits of the desire or tolerance of freedom and cooperation, but only the mentally ill go off into the wilderness with no clothing or tools, expecting to survive. And only the mentally ill live in society, benefitting from the contributions of everyone else, while claiming to be independent.

It is the birth right of every individual. Independence means to live life ones own way under some set rules of the society. These rules are framed so that every one can enjoy the freedom.

We are born with independent spirits. Though we are dependent on our parents and other societal means to survive, we want - innately - to be our own boss, live our own lives, build our own homes, earn our own money, etc. Who never wanted to grow up and leave home?
Yes, it is a great responsibility and quite risky - especially in these times - but we naturally need to be independent and not be a burden on others. It's what makes us feel manly or womanly. We can stand tall and feel proud of who we are.

We want to be independent, free. Not everybody realizes the burder of responsibility as well as risk. Not everybody has a high sense of responsibility.
People make many bad irresponsible decisions!

This is the ego. There is no such thing as independence. If you analyze carefully you will find all things are interdependent upon multiples that are also dependent in an infinite carousel of cause and effect as in this is because that is.

We are genetically disposed to division. Macro and micro worlds move apart. The universe WANTS to fill the void. So it expands, stretches, divides.
