Well at 13:00 traffic in Athens is ok.. If you arrive during mid August it will be more than ok because lots of people will be on leave during that period.
The safest and timeliest way to go to the center of Athens is by the metro.

the above link is the metro map. You will use the blue line from the airport. The centre of Athens is at Syntagma and Omonoia (red line). Where is your hotel located exactly?

If you take a cab from the airport, it will take you approximately 45mins to arrive and about 30-35€. The metro is 6€ or 3,6€ i cannot remember... and it will take you about the same time as with the cab. Choose your type.. ;)
From time to time we hear about terrible rip offs from taxi drivers, but that does not mean you have to be afraid of them. There are still honest and decent people among us...

FYI, US residents do not need visas to travel to Greece unless they are plan on staying there for more than 3 months, students or workers or some other entities who need visas.

Athens airport is very modern and shouldn't take you long to collect your baggage. You need to convert some dollars to Euros - or at least have 50-100 Euros on you when you leave the USA. I would suggest taking the Subway - you will have to transfer at one station to continue into central Athens or whereever your hotel is.

Athens taxis have developed a better reputation but there may be some scoundrels remaining. Make sure the destination is clear and he's taking you towards Athens and not racking up the fare - make note of his taxi number and the number to call for complaints.

Hi there,

I did that just recently. Around 13:00 o'clock, the traffic is not that bad and should not take longer than 45 min to get to the city center. An interesting thing to consider is that during the peak touristic months (June-August), Athenians go to the Greek islands as well for their own holidays and the traffic in Athens gets even better (e.g. during August, Athens is really empty...)!

wish you a nice flight!

You had to do it? Didn't you? With such a large quantity and you thought you will get away? And that sob that had to take all for personal use? Why did he not think of all those poor souls that will be dancing Marmango with no protection? Very selfish indeed. But you can always try to do it again in a future trip. You have to do something for all those followers and lovers amongst them. BTW.Since Vasiliki has Vasopita and Fanouris, fanouropita, when do you think we will see a Pandoropita? With a tube of vaseline inside as a gift. @ Agabes mou. Sorry to hear you sprained your angle and you have made a poor soul so desperate. And YOU have no one to agree with you. Zikooooooo!!!!!! @ Pandora. I try to figure you as the 20th wife to a Moustafa Pasa and it comes hard to realise with so many followers. rather the other way round. An Emine soultana with 20 husbands is more likely . @ Pandoropita. I only made a suggestion and you run to get the idea? Shame on you! Why don't you try your own ideas? The next we will hear of, is an Airpolopita !!!!! hahaha. San polla frouta mazeytikame. @ Pandora. It seems that I made a wrong suggestion with the Pandoropita, because it developed into an Airpolopita too. I wish I had someone to protect my name too. The God of War has taken it upon himself to protect yours. It seems I open the Aeolous' sacks of winds. And Pandora was only a block away drinking her coffee facing her gallery @ Airpolopita. As I said polla frouta mazevtikame kai polloi arxaioi.

if you used the underground "metro" form the the time that you leave airport until you reach Peireas (the port) you will need almost two hours for destinations closer to the airport less, for examlpe at about 1 hour on the underground you should reach Sintagma Square Station (the central station of Athens if you decide on alernative transport avoid if possible cab ""taxi"" drivers, they have avery bad reputation and deservigly so, some of them seems to be in the lookout for coustomers to fleech, espesially foreign tourists. Welcome to Greece!

With a fair waiting time for your luggage at the transport belt, you will need 1h30 if your hotel is close to Athens center.
Enjoy your trip..

At least 1 hour, at most 2 hours, depending on traffic, delays of baggage at the airport, etc.
