Thousands of pounds are spent every year, rescuing those who by their own lack of foresight (and often plain stupidity) get themselves into trouble. I live on the coast and this happens all the time.
What do you think?

We are charged for it. We pay tax and council tax. That's how we are charged for everything that the state provides for us. Nothing is free, we pay for everything. Including being rescued, and one day it may be you. That's how it works. Sometimes people are charged by local services if they feel the person took unneccessary risks.

There are also rescue services provided by charities such as the RNLI. In that case the contributors pay for the rescue. People rescued by them always make a contribution I can assure you.

But rest assured any service you get from the state, you've paid for it. People say we have free health service. Bullsh.t, it's all paid for through taxation. It's not free

In the UK I think you will find that many are charged. For example, if an ambulance `rescues` you after an accident you are sent a bill by the NHS. The same applies to rescuing your cat if it gets stuck up a tree, you are sent a bill, from the Fire Brigade. I think it is only "acts of God" rescues that you are not charged for in many cases.

Right now, in Texas, a search is underway for a 6 year old boy who was swept away in a flooded river. He and a group of people, which included adults, were walking in a river that was overflowing its banks due to flooding and the boy got swept away. Now they are spending who knows how much money searching for him. Let's face it, the kid is long gone.

The adults with the group should be punished for being so stupid as to being doing that and they should have to pay the full cost of the "rescue" effort (actually corpse retrieval effort). I have no sympathy in this case, or in many others where the stupidity of the individual is responsible for their problems.

Colorado (USA) charges for rescue in State & Federal Parks. I believe it's county driven by who charges and who doesn't charge.

Rescue is still chaged to tax-payers for city search & rescue like when a month ago a child was swept away by a flash flood.

I know what you mean. Like these clowns who go climbing in ridiculously dangerous areas and then rescuers have to go risk their lives to rescue them. Yeah....I think there ought to be some kind of charge or penalty or something. I know we all make mistakes but I'm talking about when people do physical things that are known to be very high risk. If they want to do that and it affects no one else, fine, but it never works that way.
