Really, why does sh*t smell bad? What makes it sometimes worse than other times? Is it different by person?

Indole and skatole are foul smelling compounds produced by the decomposition of tryptophane and other amino acids. Hydrogen sulfide is sometimes produced, causing the odor of rotten eggs. The bacteria in our intestines do good thinks like produce vitamin K, but foul odor is unfortunately an adverse side effect.
There have been reports that odors vary by family. This may be in part due to genetic variation of the person or of the person's intentinal bacteria. Dietary differences may also have an influence. Only a few (mad?) scientists have studied the subject, and my suspicion is that the powers that be at the NIH are reluctant to fund such research.

The normal bad smell i can understand but what *I* want to know is what makes it smell like something died. neighbor once shot a feral cat that was a nuisance and it crawled someplace unreachable and must have died because for about a month or better we all smelled a certain nasty odor that i now call something died. that smell sometimes comes from poop. what causes THAT?

The smell is certain bacteria and gasses being produced during digestion, so it all depends on how much of what is produced each time. And of course, everyone's poop smells different.

The bacteria inside of the feces is what makes them smell so bad. Specifically, the bacteria produce various compounds and gases that lead to the infamous smell of feces. Methane and hydrogen are also the culprits...

its definetly different by the person ... but everyones ish does stink ... its waste .. bodily waste at that .. u cant expect waste to be pretty.. what i want 2 know is y some people have so much diareah .. i dont get it .. some people every time they go and ish it really really stinks... bad.. elllll ..lol

ha ha ha, so funny, go along and check every toilet . i suggest a job in sweeping the lavatory will solve your problems and you will like the smell
