Hey~
It really depends on what area you're living in; whether or not you're in a big city, or a small town. I've lived in both and could help you more if you were more specific.
Good Luck!

That's a huge question. Every city and state is different. I would suggest that you learn the city or town where you will be living as quickly as possible. Take some time to just ride the city bus all around the town until you have seen the 'downtown' area, and other highlights of the city. Sit next to the driver and let him know that you are new to the states and ask him about the city. He can tell you a lot. Take time also to learn the Police Department in your area, the Fire Dept. etc. These are people that are available to help you. Purchase the newspapers, and city papers so you can learn about the atmosphere. It is most unfortunate, but our world today is full of crime and people who do evil. Be careful wherever you travel. I believe that people, for the most part can be and want to be friendly towards each other, but sometimes we are afraid to make that step. Don't be afraid to speak to people and ask questions. Check out the public library for books and other material that can help you learn the city. Don't be afraid to venture out. Go to the movies, go shopping, attend the theatre. Meet people, have lunch. I wish you the best and just remember that you may be new to the states, but you have much culture and information that you can share with those you meet. Best wishes to you.
