I learned to drive on a stick shift and to this day, I prefer them over an automatic. Unfortunately, most cars produced in the U.S. these days come with automatic transmissions because AmeriKans are so stupid and lazy they don't want to learn how to shift a transmission... not surprising, since most of them are too dumb to DRIVE a car... they point it down the road and mash the gas pedal and tell theirself what a good driver they are... but when something happens... they don't know how to handle the car to get out of the situation... so that is why there are so many crashes in the is country.
Parallel parking is no longer required for a Driver's License because most AmeriKans are such bad drivers they can't do it.

Different countries, different ways of doing things.
It doesn't make one way better than the other. For whatever reason in the United States an automatic took over in popularity. They make most of the cars as automatics and when you learn to drive, it is generally in an automatic. So naturally, most people drive them.
I don't think it makes a person lazy, that is just a ridiculous assumption.

Ive spent time in Europe and My understanding is you all had stick shifts because of fuel economy. i own a stick shift and and automatic, the manual is fun to drive, but its also nice just to be able to get in a car and go, i can sit on a hill at a light and not have to mess with a clutch brake and gas when the light changes or drive in traffic and not have to up shift down shift whatever to get from point a to point b. besides usually you can get more miles out of an automatic before maintenance than you can a stick before you have to change out clutch discs.

re: This is why i ask, what is so good about an automatic? And Why not drive a manual?
have had both.. currently have an 07 chevy cobalt ss/sc. 5sp stick...
automatics.. dont need to shift a bunch of times to go to the grocery... automatics have no clutch to burn up... i prefer the automatic because im a lazy ****. couldnt imagine the cobalt with an automatic though...its a fun car.

With my current vehicle it's because that's what it came with and it was an otherwise acceptable machine at the right price. All things being equal I'd prefer a manual transmission - less to go wrong and cheaper and easier to fix if it does.
It is true that the gas mileage difference is negligible with the most up to date automatics but more complicated technology also means more things to fail.

The biggest reason for driving a stick is the better gas mileage. Since Americans haven't until now cared much about fuel mileage, the car makers built more cars with autos than sticks. Stick shift american made cars are hard to find.

If you visit my country (Panama) you will be surprise of the hours you have to spend on a single street cause of the traffic jam.
There are just too many cars for a single city and most of the cars just carry one person inside, so everyone using a car in a city with crappy streets, you will get sick of the manual transmission soon or later.
I love to shift in highways, but when it comes to everyday way to work, please, must have automatic.

We just bought a new car, and the salesman told us the mpg was only minimally better in a stick shift. I enjoy the ease of being able to drive, talk on my cell phone, smoke or sip my coffee on the morning commute, without the hassle of needing to change gears manually.

Why do I drive an automatic? Simple: one thing less to concentrate on in dense traffic. Whenever I drive my wife's (manual) Toyota and get stuck in a traffic jam I wish I'd be in my good old auto Merc.
