I remember enormous wedges of watermelon that we had to eat on the porch, because we made such a mess.

Sparkers remain my favorite, because they were the first fireworks I was big enough to hold myself.

By all means, I'd love to hear Canada Day memories, as well.

Yes, 63 years ago in Chicago..our neighborhood had a parade, My aunt had made my sister and me stars and stripes dresses alike. Mine was blue and white and my sister's was red and white.. We marched in the parade and won first place..we each got a pair of roller skates with keys!

How great, at that time each neighborhood was similar to a small town...did the same things a small town does.

Those skates and our dresses will never be forgotten...

Well of course there are the usual memories of family get-togethers, with fireworks and good food, however I do have one that is, without a doubt, my all time favorite.
My younger daughter was born on Independence Day. She was nearly a month over-due and the doctor was just about ready to, shall we say, force the issue. Not to be forced into anything by anyone and, I feel certain, knowing what an appropriate date it was for her, she made her appearance early in the afternoon of the Fourth of July. All through the years as they were growing up, her sister and brother never quite understood all the extra celebration that went on for her birthday but not for theirs. Now that they're grown. . . she still says the fireworks are all for her!

I have two, both of which involved being on holiday. When I was 18, I was on a sixteen-day long trip out in the western United States and a little of Canada with a couple of guys from secondary school. A little over halfway through the trip on 4 July we were in California, visiting Sequoya National Park. Definitely a great way to explore America while taking in some of nature's beauty.

Five years ago today, I was again on holiday. I was in Utah going to a small convention based on Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game", of which it was the 25th anniversary of the original short story. On the day before the convention's start on 4 July, I was on a bit of a road trip with my rental. I drove from Salt Lake City to the Golden Spike National Historical Monument. I had the opportunity to watch a re-enactment of the laying of the golden spike, which completed the first trans-continental railway. After that, I visited the nearby Thiokal plant, where they have a display of the rockets that they built for NASA, which includes the booster rockets for the Space Shuttle. After that, I drove into Idaho and put on a whole lot of mileage on the rental, which had started at 4 miles on the odometer.

Both of these were great memories. Thanks for asking.

Just spending time with my family...
Picnics, fireworks, watermelon seed-spitting contests w/ my brothers (I'm the youngest of 4, & the only girl...I worshiped my big brothers!!)
I miss bottle rockets being legal...we used to shoot them from the old Coke bottles.
Now I'm feeling all nostalgic & stuff! LOL!!
My family is literally spread out around the world. I miss them. Think I'll go spit some watermelon seeds, for old times' sake.

12 yrs. ago today was the last day I lived in L.A. w/ my Dad. We spent the day BBQing w/ family & friends then, we all went up in the hills behind the Rose Bowl to watch the fireworks. I got on a plane, for Oklahoma, at 7am the next day. It was bitter sweet but, I wouldn't be alive today if I had stayed there.

Back in 1988, a bunch of us went to Lenox Mall and watched the Fireworks. And they did that sucker up right. Before it started? There was plenty of music and people having a good time. And when the show started? It was really something to behold.

Today would have been my grandma's 105th birthday. Back then she'd put on the full meal and invite all the relatives and everything was in red, white, and blue. I'd play in the backyard and pick up a pail full of buckeyes from her tree. I still miss grandma, she really knew how to throw a party.

I like the part when Jeff Goldblum kicks the trash can and it says "art dept" on the bottom. Independence Day is a good movie.
