No you cannot, but there is a way to bypass this. I use iTunes but I don't have an iPod. I use iTunes to buy and download CD's, then I burn it to a CD. Once I do that I use a freeware mp3 ripper to rip the songs off of the cd into a folder on my desktop. Then once that is done I am able to put the songs on my mp3 player.

One of these days I might be able to afford the outrageously expensive iPod, but for now this is what I do.

It depends. I have a blackberry phone with MP3 capabilities and I use missing sync software and can download playlists to my non ipod phone from Itunes. There is a windows and MAC OSX . Check the Web for other such software

no, you can't. It's proprietary software that Apple designed to only be used with their ipod. In fact there is an anti-trust lawsuit being brought against apple because of this.
