Because all 4 wheels will pull. Instead of the usual 2.

Not all SUV's are 4x4, just as not all 4x4's are SUV's. SUV is a class of vehicle, just like truck or station wagon. 4x4 refers to how many wheels the vehicle has that are driven by the engine.

Suv were called 4by4 long before they thought of the name SUV it means four wheel drive on all four wheels ~~

4x2= 4 wheels with power going to 2 wheels.
