Yeah, those things dissolve, but then where does it all go? Right into your water! It can totally mess up your water chemistry. You're better off feeding your fish before you leave and just leaving them. They can easily go without food for a week.

Or, spend a bit of money and get the powered automatic feeders (you can get a basic one for around $15 here) that you can hook over the side of your tank and will automatically dispense a portion of food on a timer. With these, you probably want to run it for a few days in advance to make sure it won't overfeed your fish. These would be a good option if you intend to be gone for longer than a week.

Otherwise, you can always have someone you trust come over and feed your fish. (Once a day at most, every 2-3 days would be fine.) Make sure you pre-measure the amount of food and keep it right by the tank. You may want to hide the rest of the food, as the biggest problem with fish-sitters is overfeeding. Good containers for pre-measuring food are empty film canisters or those pill containers with the sections marked for days of the week.

Same here, stay away from the feeder blocks. The main ingredient is plaster of paris. Do you like the way plaster tastes? I went on a business trip for 30 days once, didn't feed my fish any while I was gone, and didn't lose one single fish. Of course I did a 50% water change as soon as I got home, and everything was good after that.

I'm guessing you got a vacation feeder block. In which case, they are designed not to disolve right way. They are supposed to last anywhere from three to seven days. What kind did you buy? The two I know of is the plaster ones (white) and the silicone ones. I have never had any fish really take to the silicone ones.

I will concur with the previous couple of posts.

Those feeding blocks are almost all filler, almost 0 nutrition. Those who buy them are paying extra not to feed their fish.

A healthy goldfish can go anywhere from two weeks to many months without food depending on certain environmental factors like water temperatures, with no negative health affects. A week long holiday is easy for them.

To be honest, most of those feeding blocks meant to last several days are junk. I wouldn't use them if I were you. Feed your fish daily while you are there and they will easily go a week without food when you are away.

I agree with the previous answers. Ditch the white things entirely, your fish will happily go without food for a few days if you are going away on holiday.

I would invest in some plants - mine love pond weed. They will chew on this if they get hungry.

Those things are totally unneccessary. Goldfish can easily go a week without eating. It will only foul your tank. Skip that thing altogether.

Food tablets last three to five days the usually use it when you go on vacation for the fish to eat while your gone.
