I am starting sixth form this year. I want to go into medicine, and have taken the generally required subjects, but what sort of work experience would make me stand out when applying to universities? I know that competition for med school places can be quite strong.

My daughter just got accepted into a top rated medical school starting this fall. These are the steps she took to get there. Had a real passion for becoming a Doctor at an early age, took AP classes in High School, was in a program at High School called The Heart Academy, Went to a University that wasn't known for "fun" but was connected to the Medical University, Majored in Biology and other sciences, did a study under the direction of her professor on remembering eye witnesses and recollection during a line-up(?) Got a job at the local Veterans Hospital under what is called the STEP program (Students Temp Employment Program) - they (the VA) has to work around the students classes and activities for scheduling of work, did volunteering at the Medical Center in the care of which she is choosing to go into the medical field for and above all else - STUDY,STUDY,STUDY - yet HAVE fun!!! Hope this helps you on your quest!! I read some of the other answers first - some are just wanting 2 points- others had thoughtful answers. Good Luck and thank you for wanting to serve your fellow human beings in a Medical Way. Forgot to mention that quite a few Veteran Hospitals are linked to near by Medical Universities where they have programs for the younger Medical students to do residency and such.

Doing paid or voluntary work in a residential home for the elderly or people with learning disabilities. You could also try doing care work in a hospice.
It would be good to be in a place where you can receive some skills in counselling, social care etc.

first of all it is not a call for for admission to medical college. yet i might exceptionally propose you get some adventure dealing with sufferers and ailment and blood and sadness previously you settle directly to commit your profession to drugs. you could discuss with a commonplace practitioner you recognize, and notice in case you could shadow him/her, or you could volunteer in a hectic ER, the place you notice all forms of stuff. It facilitates in case you recognize an ER rfile yet regardless of in case you do no longer, pass down there whilst it is not busy and discuss with the attending commonplace practitioner, tell him/her you prefer to come back returned later to assist whilst it is busy and you promise to stay out of how. and then persist with by way of. ensue once you're saying, and do stay the hell out of how. as quickly as they get used to seeing you extraordinary around they are going to start to ask you to do issues, like get this, get that, placed him over there, throw this away, then later help us out, stitch this up, and so on. you will get lots of medical adventure that way, and that they are going to in general be happy for the help as long as you're constantly friendly, have thick epidermis, do no longer faint, and stay out of how. sturdy success.
