It's the name of the data network for Cingular/AT&T that is considered "2G" or 2nd generation. The new "3G" network by Cingular/AT&T is supposed to be a significant improvement.
EDGE is/was one of the slowest in the US.

Edge is currently the term for Cingular (A T&T) high speed mobile internet for their cell phones. Speeds can reach close to 200 kilobits per second which is extremely slow compared to Verizon and Sprint EV-DO network that is capable of 700 kilobits per second reaching about DSL speed on their mobile phones internet.

Hi Patrick,
I dunno if u can understand much techy stuff but to tell ya in simple words - EDGE is an upgrade to GPRS.
EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution.
GPRS stand for General Packet Radio Service.
Both are operator determined services i.e. its in the hands of the mobile service operator to provide either of these services to their customers.
With GPRS, you can achieve download speeds of upto 44kbps (somewhat theoratical) but with EDGE the data rate can touch upto 69.3 kbps (with a theoratical bandwidth of 473 kb)
Now it depends upon your mobile handset if it supports GPRS or EDGE or both. Usually all latest mobile phone sets (2G or 3G enabled) are capable to support EDGE.
So if you've an EDGE service provided by your GSM operator, you can enjoy surfing/downloading from internet at speeds higher than what people used to get with GPRS.
Happy with the answer?
(then award this one as Best Answer...)

Unfortunately, the new IPHONES are using the AT&T EDGE 'G2', which is quite a bit slower than the 'G3' format. I hope they change over soon, or there will be a lot of unhappy IPHONE users!!
