Do not overcrowd your plan, Rome has many things you want to see. There are a lot of classical treasures, famous shopping, nice places to eat and drink.
You can go out of town and see the surrounding countryside, or relocate to an other town and look round there. Most towns in Italy are worth visiting.
Or you can visit an area with a lot of smaller villages and enjoy beach, country-life and so on.
Basically the same goes for France, almost all towns are worth going, and in most you can spend a few days.
If you feel you NEED to see the most famous things, and as many towns as you can, take overnight trains, and spend at least 2 whole days in whatever town you go to.
But better take it easier and select 3 town and see all proper.
Paris is the most famous and biggest of all French towns, but if you fly home from Italy you might want to go to a town near the Italian border, like Marseilles, Nice or Cannes.

Hey,
I am currently living in Germany. I have been here for two and a half years. I am about to leave, but you may want to bring rain gear. We have been getting a lot of flash floods out here. In Italy, you may want to visit Florence, the statue of David is located here. Stop by Vicennza, absolutely beautiful. France has Paris, where the louve is.

I lived in London. It rocks, Central London, thymes river, the usual - then check out Oxford University, the Crazy Horse Sal. is across the street, Bill Clinton worked there, then there's the trip to Paris from London, TOO much to do, I guess it depends on what you're into. You can catch the tube (please mind the gap! lol) from Charing Cross, stay off of the British Rail after dark..it gets really shady!
