Well, if a change of server operating system is in the pipeline (or you're *very* forward-thinking), you will want to avoid certain characters because they won't be allowed on the operating system.

I knew from the question that this was a text book or teacher's homework assignment question.
Students can get answers via this forum and not master the material. Later on, during exams, they fail and wonder why.
You need to master the material and answer these yourself.
Regardless, computers are very exacting and intollerant when doing any sort of search. A difference in case, slash direction, etc makes the search criteria differ from the item searched. For this reason, exact matches are required for success. Standardizing makes the match error less likely and this is the root reason for standardizing.
The exact standards are promulgated through standards organizations and used throughout for these reasons.
