I am using windows 2000, inside task manager it shows 2 boxes for the cpu, however using the same set up but with windows xp the task manager shows 4 cpu windows.

Does windows 2000 recognise quad core CPUs?
Are only 2 CPUs being used in windows 2000?

thanks

2000 came out well before Dual Core processors and therefore even further before Quad core so I suspect it wont properly support the quads. You should check Microsoft to see it there were any upgrades for multiple core CPU's for 2000.. I would just use XP since it is more stable in that configuration.

Here is a great article for you... you will need a different LICENSE for 2000!

It's the operating system. Dual core processors were not around when Windows 2000 was produced. Your best bet is to update to XP or Vista. You'll probably see performance bonuses from the new operating system anyway.

i could anticipate that a million quad middle could outperform 2 twin cores. this is going to additionally be greater capability helpful and could generate plenty much less warmth than once you have 2 or greater actual processors put in

upgrade to XP Pro. Win2k doesn't support more than 2 processors (either by license or by underlying code). Get Vista if you can
