The limits to an employees right to privacy come in when they are doing it on company time and company equipment. Such as writing personal emails if an employee is suspected of doing this the employer could put in a keylogger and log in every thing that the employee has been typing. I think that business should put keyloggers on their systems also I think they should have a system that the phone calls are monitored and so forth. This helps against people chatting online on company time and making unnecessary phone calls.

I'm sure it costs companies millions of dollars a year from lost productivity from employees doing personal business at work. Companies have every right to see what you are doing while they are paying you and you are using their equipment. That's why more and more companies are installing keystroke programs and such to be able to tell who is doing what.
When in doubt, don't do it. Never, ever, let anyone question your integrity. Just remember, that you can always be replaced with someone who will abide by the companies rules, if you aren't willing.

Agree. One has no right to expect privacy for personal messages while using equipment that is provided for the function of the business. The employer in fact has a duty to ensure the equipment and the employee are working for the benefit of the organization and not merely wasting time, or worse, involved in some activity that will bring harm to the organization.

It doesn't matter if you, I or anyone else agrees or disagrees. The case law if already settled on this matter. An employer may without recourse, monitor the activities of it's employees in all NON-Private areas, including computer use, the use of company equipment and time, phones and yes, even an employee's auto can be searched under certain circumstances.

Many call center calls are recorded for training, Quality improvement, and management reasons anyway. Recording the rest of the company is extremely expensive and its a little bit much and doesn't say much for its managements hiring practices. Key loggers have been on many systems for a long time. This is smart to be able to track virus's, gaming, and other violations. Bandwidth resources is also an expensive commodity and so are IT folks.

I both agreee and disagree, if its company time then why isn't he doing work, if there isn't work to do then it shouldn't be a problem. Although if he is doing this while there is work to be done, then the boss is well within his rights to put on a keylogger, wasted time is wasted money

well...the reason is dumb. to keep people from doing these things at all. personally, i don't see the issue with doing this stuff on company time. i get that it seems ridiculous that they would be paying you to read personal e-mails but, i look at my job and... well, if i didn't do anything for personal entertainment i would just be sitting there all day. i work in a call center and in between calls, i have nothing else to do. so, they could pay me to do something for myself or they could pay me to twiddle my thumbs. i agree that inappropriate or offensive material, ie: porn, should not be allowed. and i really don't care if they monitor what i do to screen for that type of thing. like it says here, it's their system and their equipment. sure, they have a right to look at what i do, i just think they shouldn't have a problem with me doing it.

Compnies monitor cummunications all the time. Most do not get heavy handed with it since it would drive many employees away.
