ok I was expecting some very obstructing results - do not think of it as a country issue - imagine the 5 prime ministers are sitting together in a train and their most important agenda is to provide their countrymen the best economic conditions - what do you suggest they should do - forget the past - act realistically.

so for now one of the 8 answerers agree. Anyway I think it is a very difficult enterprise but all the same it is inevitable. You cannot stop it from happening the sons, or grand sons of the internet using generation will go for on SAU. South Asia Union. It does not erase the national identity - it simply binds the countries in one Economy by one currency and mutual Economic Laws. Very Lucrative indeed and with the help of the information technology it is much easier to do so today than say only 20 years ago ...

no for the common union like EU first and foremost condition is mutual trust which is completely lacking in Indian sub continent.
Pakistan and Bangladesh are not secular countries and suppressing the minorities and there is no freedom to its citizens if they are not followers of Islam.
there no democracy in these Islamic countries.
Pakistan has illegally occupied the Indian territory and has fought three wars with India and fighting proxy war till date.
it is in the best interest of India to keep a distance form these radical states and continue to help SRI LANKAand Nepal because sooner or later pak and Bangladesh would be ruled by purely Taliban style government.

The South east Asian countries can only come together under one umbrella if and only if the entire region reforms itself.
Radical Islam as practiced in Pakistan and Bangladesh would never permit integration with Hindu India.
In the current situation,it would be best to let the people of south Asia get educated and achieve a better standard of living.
Once the education levels reach 90% of the population, then it would be possible to intiate a dialogue for establishment of a South East asian free market.
Even the European countries took the entire 20th century to agree on the European community.
Even today Islamic Turkey is not a member as yet.
Hence in the present circumstances, with the level of mistrust between India ,Pak and Bangladesh,it is more advisable for these coutries to concentrate on economic development through education, infrastructure development and prudent fiscal management.
South East Asian market and a Federal setup can wait for the time being!

Most European countries are developed countries. India is considered a developing country on the rise. Soon India will become an economic giant and the economy will compete with world powers. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka depends on western worlds economic aid to survive. India is only country among the countries that you have mentioned do not depend on economic aid from western world. It is in India's interest not to think or form a South Asian Community like Europe. India don't need friends whom they can not trust. We have helped Bangladesh win their independence and what are we getting in return? A back stabbing, selfish and unappreciative neighbour.

No..that would never work since so many ppl have their own agenda.

Second, each one has it's own dominant religion and thus it will create clashes. Why should India take on other countries' problems...they have their own. As it's they do have trade amongst themselves without calling them SAU. What has been the benefit of the EU to other nations in EU other than one currency.

The laws and corruption in all four nations will make it even tougher to make it work.

Let them operate as individually and don't try to copy what West does. What works for West doesn't necessarily works for East.

If there was an open market and open borders, the cities and towns will be filled with foreigners and that will be the end of individuality and hence national pride will be lost.

Well, that's my humble opinion.

Instead of uniting four countries, try to unite within the country.

The biggest advantage that a single currency offers, is for tourists who visit the area, they will not have to loose money converting between one currency to another. Most other business transactions happen using Dollar, Euro or the Pound.

Having one currency just ties one country on the hip with the problems of the others. There will need to be a common monetary policy for all. How can we have a monetary policy when there is more money changing hands illegally than legally. This makes no sense for any of these countries.

Have you heard the saying in India, all beggars joined together to construct a mutt ( a philanthropic monastery to feed poor). Joining is fine but who is to donate funds.
It is very similar to that, you are asking these nations to join. The European community is doing business to develop wealth by regulating their investments.
In this region we can invest only poverty, and all surrounding nations would eat away what small wealth India possess

India and pakistan have sent most of the past fifty years at war. Bangladesh barely has any roads to india because of the tense diplomatic soluition. You suggest putting Hitler in a partnership with the US you have no realization of history.

Too many different religions in the area. Why do you think Pakistan was created out of India when Great Britain gave India its independence in (I believe) 1947?
