When did liberal start meaning communist?

Question

I am socially moderately liberal and fiscally conservative. I care about the Constitutional more than most things and would die fighting anyone trying to take my or anyone else's Constitutional rights away. I care about the environment a lot, also. George Washington said this country should be more liberal. The Founding Fathers were the same type of liberals I am. But the thing is I see some liberals that sound more like communists than Americans. And I see a lot of right-wing people calling every liberal a communist when I am nowhere close to communism and I hate communism more than most things. What has happened to the right type of liberals?

I wish more people could get along and that the morons who are too liberal or too conservative would stop bickering over who is better instead of working with each other and being Americans.

I am socially liberal, but conservative on fiscal matters, believe the constitution is the reason our country is great. Most liberals speak out on freedoms, they do not want the government controlling their lives, this hardly puts them under the definition of communists.
Its only because some people are unable to give any type of logical arguement to support their stances, so they have to resort to name calling

'liberal' came to mean leftist around the Carter/Reagan era in America.
The social conservatives used it as a term of rebuke - but also because Frankfurt School social Marxism WAS(and is ) being introduced by stealth in eduction,media etc under the label of 'liberalism'.

In other countries there is many parties with Liberal in their title.
In Australia the main conservative party are called liberal.

More accurately in Europe it means to straddle the middle ground between Right and Left.

Economic liberalism is actually what most American rightists advocate/support. That was the main ideology of the British Liberal Party during the 18th and19th Century.

Some in England still call free market ism 'whigism' as the Liberals were also known as the Whigs.
Some see Margret Thatcher as a 'Classical Liberal' in the 18th/19th century context.

Liberals want:
Socialized Medicine under the control of the Government.
Education controlled by the Government, where our Children are indoctrinated in Socialist ideas, such as it takes a Village to raise a Child. NO, it does not. It takes two parents, a man and a woman, and not only the Mother on Welfare.
THE ACLU (AMERICAN? CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION) is with the Liberal Left, and is always involved in the Educational and Political Arena.
The ACLU was founded on January 1, 1920, by the National Civil Liberties Bureau, which grew out out the American Union Against Militarism. Many of the Founders were Communist, and Socialist who like Helen Heller and Elizabeth Flynn Gurley, who were Communist, and who sympathized with the National Socialism of Adolf Hitler.
The ACLU is presently representing [ NAMBLA], the North American Man-Boy Love Association. They are providing free Legal Service to this Sex Organization in Massachusetts which encourages Pedophilia and Legalizing Sex between Children and Adults.
Appears that the Liberal Left is matched with the ACLU.

My neighbors are the right kind of liberal. They are socially and environmentally conscious, volunteer quite a bit, do their part to make the world a better place.

They don't, however, espouse the idea that the government's job is to take money away from the rich and middle class and give it to the poor to "level the playing field." That's socialism rather than communism, an idea that the "wrong" kind of liberal is all for.

I'm a libertarian, by the way. I think may neighbors are, too .... they just don't realize it, yet.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Because to be socially liberal, you have to take other's money against their will to attempt to help someone else. Notice that I said "attempt". Most social programs do NOT work, or they have unfavorable unintended consequences.
The Left/Liberals/Socialists/Communists have managed to make it difficult if not an outright phobia to accuse someone of being a Communist. What better way to hide your hatred for America than by claiming you love America and just want to help the more unfortunate?
Do you mean the Founding Fathers that accepted slavery as ok and that only land owners could vote? Those liberal Founding Fathers?
Take a look at the thumbs ups and downs on answers to questions. You will see lots of thumbs down on questions where only a communist would give such a rating. Go ask a question like Do you LOVE America? and look for the thumbs down on the answers by people that say they love America. Why would anyone do that? The short answer is because they hate America and everything it stands for.

Some Conservatives use it as a "Straw Man" attack on those that disagree with them. However, in the 30's and 40's a lot of Communists DID in fact infest many labor unions and liberal groups.

You say that the founding father's said the country should be more liberal than it is. Remember thta that type of liberalism was more in line with modern conservativism than with modern liberalism. LIberalism is communism in its fiscal sense. This was adopted in the 60's and 70's when the liberals moved way over to the left. You are more libertarian than anything (A Hybrid).

I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say this, but the kind of 'liberals' you're talking about don't exist except in the fevered minds of the right wing radio talk show morons. These guys have redefined the word 'liberal' to create an all purpose strawman enemy....think Emmanual Goldstein in the novel 1984. The 'liberal', as they describe this mythical critter, can commit any crime, hold any goofy view, hate America, love Saddam, want to 'cut and run', raise taxes, marry animals, 'believes' in global warming, and wants to force small children to eat broccoli. In fact, to the reactionaries of the right EVERYONE not fully on board with their world view is a 'liberal'...a non-existant entity that desires world communism, redistribution of wealth, destruction of 'Christianity', flag burning as an Olympic sport and the immediate repeal of the Second Amendment. If you can find any people like that, let me know!

When more liberals started siding with the communists during the Vietnam War, and every other communist war after that, not to mention every war we're involved in that communists simply want us to lose. JFK was a liberal, but he was as much of an anti-communist as Truman, Ike, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush #41 were. Groups like International ANSWER, "Not In My Name" and the "World Can't Wait" are communist fronts who aren't tied to the jihadists we're fighting against.

Then you don't belong to today's Liberal Left... the usage of the word has passed you by... Most "Liberals" that post here do hold left wing views that are virtually indistinguishable from the Communist/Socialist agenda. Pretty much lock step brain dead ranting. Facts have no place in their rants... just feel good slogans... no matter how irrational or unworkable that they are. Results don't count.... just intentions.... Good intentions count for everything no matter what the actual results may be.
