People are materialistic and lead by money, greed and posessions. People show little compassion and empathy for others. People are selfish and blame everything on the government. People think war will solve our problems with other countries, it just makes things worse. There are so many reasons why our society is slowly deteriorating, only a minority do anything about it though. I think if tomorrow is going to be brighter and more optomistic we all need to change.

Somehow I think it works differently from that. Everything can be looked at from so many angles and people don't get what someone else is saying half the time, but I think this is right in one way. I think we have a collective consciousness and the mind holds so much information that we don't even handle so we all have the potential to do a lot of bad of our own brand so none is really better until we root out subconsious problems and answer questions mankind hasn't gotten answers to yet. As one gets answers and they get around the consciousness of everyone is expanded. In other words we all rise or fall together on the evolutionary journey, pretty much. Even if we do lift our head a little, we need more to do the things we really want and need to do. If I were a genius, maybe I could make that work on all levels, but we all have only partial knowledge. I can dig out value in most comments, it's a shame we don't appreciate each others worth more. I think most people are very blind to there own shortcomming, I know I am. I think these add up to the mess. We all have to do our part instead of pointing the finger and thereby the responsibility. Enlightenment is trying to carry your part. In "The Tipping Point" Marcus Maxell shows how it is being found that hate and things like that, are similar to viruses, travel around the world and at critical mass erupt and get out of control. We can control that like viruses. Heal ourselves and isolate those that keep spreading it. We have the technologies to fix the mind now and all have to use them, and we can now even oil the squeeky wheel before it falls off, that is the troubled person. We are not doing that and the ever increasing pressures unavoidable in modern life are leading to Columbines, VA Techs and even Iraq. The kind of image we have been sending to the Mid-East is repugnant to Muslims, it adds up until some one unstable, like a Ben Laden thinks they are doing God's will. If Musilims didn't add fuel to his fire he would probably fizzle out and they would control their own, one way or another. He would have nowhere to hide, but somehow too many just aren't repulsed enough by him. We knew we didn't know how to win an urban guerilla war and haven't bothered to find out how nor have they. It's a responsibility no one will take on. I'm not convinced we can't, with all the knowledge available and minds of the world. It's a world problem and everyone can do their part to stop hate at their door. I don't see another way in the end.

The US has the highest number of serial killers per head of population compared to other countries in the world.

Obesity in the US and western Europe is on the increase with all the attendant health problems that go with it. Meanwhile, large numbers of people in Africa don't have enough to eat.

Yup. Aspects of western society are sick.

Its a sick society when innocent people are being killed by terrorists, murderers, their own family even.

Its a sick society when people who commit the most horrendous of crimes (rape, murder, paedophilia, terrorism) get to walk teh streets again too soon after being convicted. And lets not forget when they are locked up who is footing the bill (namely the tax payers me and you)
