On this date in 1826 (The 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Indepence) Two signers (and titans of American history) died.

The quiet, 6'3" southpaw redhead from Virginia, Thomas Jefferson, and the short, grumpy firebrand from Braintree, Mass, John Adams.

Will you join me in raising a glass to their memory today, in the midst of your celebrations?

I'll have a beer for that one. Sam Adams good enough, or Bud Light?

Coffee mug is raised and raised again.

Side note re: Mr. Jefferson... Did you know that wild *ahem* "hemp" still springs up on the grounds of Monticello? I won't go into common property location sightings. Of course the National Park Service claims ignorance of this. Cannabis wasn't illegal in those days. Feel free to draw your own conclusions. ;oD

A toast to them!
When the Declaration of Independence was signed, America was a raw and ragged young nation: it perched on the edge of a vast continent and few would have bet on its survival. But it did. And what began as a hopeful idea among nations has now spread to many countries throughout the world. The call of human freedom is powerful and has sustained America since its inception. Today in a world moving towards liberty—in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East—people are choosing and defending freedom.

But freedom comes at a price and today as we celebrate, the fight to expand freedom in our world is waged at heartbreaking cost. We recognize and honor the sacrifices of those engaged in this noble effort. As President Bush recently reminded us, “The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.”
