I understand there is a product call D-Solv on the market which helps solve algae problems in backyard ponds. It's hard to find and I think can only be shipped by mail. Before going that route, has anyone tried it? Did it work very well or about the same as other products on the market?

You don't say how big your pond is or what type of filtration you have. What type of algae are you trying to get rid of? If you are trying to get rid of the floating algae (i.e. the kind that turns your water pea-soup green) then plants and shade will do it without the use of chemicals. You can also purchase a UV sterilizer which works wonders if your pond is in the sun & it's too difficult to shade. More sun = more algae, it's that simple. Your pond needs the algae that grows along the sides to help balance the environment (and fish love it!) and stabilize your water chemistry (ph, etc.). If this is the type of algae you are trying to kill, then don't. Besides the fact that it's a necessary part of the pond ecosystem, all of the dead algae will break down, cause a spike in ammonia which in turn creates nitrites and will kill your fish. We have a 1200 gallon koi pond and have dealt with every problem imaginable - believe me when I tell you PLANTS PLANTS AND MORE PLANTS (along with some shade if possible) is the way to go to control floating algae. The plants consume the nutrients in the water that the algae needs, which in turn creates oxygen for your fish and starves out the floating algae in the process. Also be sure your pump is big enough to circulate the entire volume of your pond water at LEAST once an hour if not twice - you need to keep it moving and aerated. Hope that helps & good luck to you!!

It is now called Algae-Off made by Crystal Clear. Probably due to the confusion with the paint removing product.

Yes, it's a mail order. Should work fine.
