No, its not illegal, its the same in effect as a shop, the banks can charge what they like for services. (Different for bank charges as these are penalty charges for breach of contract). Charging per direct debit though is a service fee and the banks can charge as much or as little as they like! The solution though is to change banks, most banks don't charge for direct debits. If enough people leave they would be stupid not to scrap the charge. The trouble is most people moan about things like this, but never actually take action such as closing their accounts. People are far more powerfull than they realise in numbers, individually it won't make a difference, but if everyone starts leaving then they will take notice!

Driving: why the hell should we pay to drive on certain roads? I've never understood that.
Sanitary products such as sanitary towels, tampons, etc.
Condoms, but there should be a limit to how many free ones one can have, if you want lots you have to start paying for your own sexual addictions (lol).
Water, again, to an extent, there should be a limit after which you have to pay.
Gossip magazines.
Medicines that are absolutely vital, or they should at least be really cheap.

^Actually it is free in some countries, I would like to see free and good medical care worldwide so everyone no matter what their circumstance's can get the care they deserve. Good medical care should be a right not a privilege.
