Theories about the way the physical universe works are fairly solidified these days, among physicists and astronomers. Most of the evidence seems to support the big-bang yoyo you described.
Scientists aren't in the best position to study the question of multiverse, or energy universe, or hmmm call it 'spiritual universe' just to rankle the athiests and hardened skeptics of anything that sniffs of something requiring a different approach to examine, and which isn't likely to be examined by anyone with his mental feet nailed to the floor of physical reality.
So, you'll probably get a lot of answers from people who are absolutely certain all about how the universe works. Some of them might be right.

A little of both, I think. The universe is a multiverse with every single possibility played out, but it was also created by the Big Bang, and it will collapse back upon itself in something akin to a reverse Big Bang in time, starting the cycle over again.

The Universe Works on the Principle of Evolution and involution.
If we know a lump of clay we know the total nature of the clay.
In the same way if we are to know how the universe works we need to study a part of it that's enough.
Any thing in this world can be a subject of study.
But lets take ourselves.
From a fine chromosome to a man and again lost.
So from finer we became grosser and again finer.
So do this universe from finer becomes grosser and grosser and again go back to finer.
So evolution is followed and preceded by involution in infinite series.

The second choice... and because it is every single possibility, this means all the possibilities haven't been conceived yet. The birth of each new possible gives reign to a whole new dimension... a whole new universe.

The theory worth mentioning is that, by now, there have been countless big bangs so far, and that we exist in this one because it's the only one which created the conditions for our existence.
The universe, by the opinions of most of the scientists, is endless and yet, not so. it is said once that the universe is not only stranger that we know, but even stranger than we can imagine.
it's veryveryvery confusing.
It's just a question greater than our greatness.
