If you are talking a lot of travel, such as 40K miles or more per year and you want a car that will run for 300 to 500 K miles without an engine replacement, then buy a Volvo. I have personally owned several in my 60 years that had 100 k to 500 k on the original motor when I bought them. Just keep clean oil and do proper maintenance. The Japanese cars are nice and very reliable but more than 150 k and they become very expensive very quickly. The engines have no balance shaft bearings and use other shortcuts so they do very well till the clearances open up a bit, then $$$.

If you travel a lot, then it has to be a turbodiesel for reduced consumption, relaxed cruising and effortless overtaking.
Depending on how large a car you need, I'd consider a new Ford Focus 2.0TDCi - the Saarlouis plant in Germany builds them to standards as good as Toyota, the engine has plenty of power (and more importantly loads of torque) yet still delivers good consumption, and refinement is decent too.
If you want more refinement, consider a Golf Plus 2.0TDi.
If you want more space, consider a Golf Plus, Ford C-Max, VW Passat or the new Mondeo.
If money is an issue, there should be good deals on the outgoing Mondeo.

if you have £50 grand to play with the audi RS4 is a good buy
even clarkson agree's that it knocks spots off a bmw
but any audi A4/A6, the new volvo's are very good or the passat, even the skoda superb (passat with a cheaper badge) is good value,

Crown Vic, Lincoln Town Car, Cadillac DTS,BMW 5 Series,or if you can find a late model, low mileage unit, a Crown Vic Police Interceptor Package(once in a while, you can find these new or almost new--try E-Bay Motors)

Last Night, my girlfriend and I were at the local Lincoln-Mercury dealership and discovered a new 2007 Grand Marquis(Mercury's equivalent of a Crown Vic) on sale for approx. $21000.00.

i'm inclined to agree with topgun , go with the 2.0 TDI VW Passat or one of the newer 2.0 TDI Audi A4's

Excellent mileage , alot of fun to drive around 200+ hp for both cars and to boot you can get the A4 AWD Quattro version if you wanted AWD.

& lastly both cars are quite stylish.
