My gut feeling is always not to recommend an all-in-one. First of all, they are usually ink jets, not lasers, and the printing cost is about 10 times that of a laser, because even though a laser cartridge costs about 2 to 3 times as much as ink cartridges, it lasts much longer.
Secondly, if one part of the machine develops a problem and the unit has to be repaired, you lose all functions until the unit is returned or replaced.

Stick with a Lexmark, Epson, or HP. I've used all three and each one is equally recommended. I do have an important suggestion though when you do buy one do not purchase it from Staples, or purchase any electronics through Staples, I've had many bad experiences with electronic equipment from Staples not lasting more than 6 months. I own an HP Officejet 6110 multifunction machine and have had it for about 4 years and it still works great bought it from Officedepot.
As far as refurbished models, its kind of a toss up there. I had a Canon BJC-4000 that lasted me 6 years and it was a refurbished model, so it all just depends on the original reason why the item was refurbished. Sometimes they are just shelf displays, other times they are returned due to hardware, software, or other internal issues. Problem is when you buy one you don't know what the original reason was for it being rebuilt.
I would stick with new equipment and major brand name items. Also when its time to buy new ink cartridges, regardless of what people say about using discount ink suppliers, do not do that as their ink isn't as good of a quality as the original manufacturers, and I've had issues with cartridges leaking in my printers and destroying them, or actually exploding.
