I own or have owned Porsches, BMW, and Vipers. I've instructed for race car clubs for about 10 years. High end Porsches, Ferraris, Lambo's, etc all have exceptional performance. So, when I think about your question I'd also factor in the price of the car, price of ongoing maintenance, and reliability.
All factors considered, I think the Z-06 Corvettes are hands down the best sportcars for price/performance/maintenance. A Z-06, either the new one or the C5, is a gem on the racetrack. Having instructed in them and driven against them in my Viper, Porsche 911 Turbo, and Porsche GT-3, I can honestly say they are incredibly worthwhile performers. Heck, even the new 2008 Vette will have 430 horsepower. You simply can't buy that kind of performance in the other car lines.

Ferrari is the best. They make purebred sports cars with lots of raw power that don't need turbos.
Toyota, Mitsubishi Subaru and ford don't really count because they make mostly passenger sedans.
Also mercedes does not make the SLR, it is a MCLAREN car. The same people who made the MClAREN F1.

Lets get rid of anything that has four doors. Subie and Mitsu. Ford quit making the GT there out. Merceses Benz SLR is in Toyota remaking the supra again? there out. BMW 6 series with carbon fibre roof there in. Porsche cars have Iconic statius there in. Ferrari always a contender for best sports car. Aston Martin Very limited numbers cross the great pond. you left out Panoz cars very good espaerant'e and Nissan 350 Z and soon GTR skyline.
I have to say for bang for the buck and fun the Nissan 350Z can deliver. You want race car performance Panoz cars.

for the money it would be a corvette. But Ferrari models are generally superior to all.
